Instead of purchasing pet products from multiple middlemen, companies now purchase directly from breeders or trusted pet stores. Drivers for this change include concerns about pet health and welfare, as well as a desire to improve product quality and sustainability.

As globalization continues to grow and different kinds of pet products are more readily available in today's market, the importance of pet product design in generating demand is more important than ever. Additionally, as supply and competition among the pet industry for limited market demand increases, and pricing and other marketing elements become less salient factors, pet product design equally plays a role in generating demand by providing attractive features. 

Our goals are to connect pet product producers and consumers in the same geographic area to develop a more self-reliant and resilient pet product network; improve the local pet economy; or impact pet health, environment, community or society in a specific location.

Pet goals have three dimensions: pet health, pet welfare and pet social responsibility dimensions. This concept can be used to guide pet owners, the pet industry, and pet service providers in their decisions regarding pet care and management. A related concept is sustainable pet care.
